Description
The selection of chamber works by Zdeněk Lukáš for wind instruments provides a comprehensive view of the composer's works for saxophone through this CD. The selected pieces were created between 1970 and 1994, mostly commissioned by specific performers. Rondo op. 70 for four saxophones was dedicated by Lukáš to the Sigurd Rascher Saxophone Quartet, which was founded in 1969 in the United States and later moved to Germany, where it still operates today. For a member of this ensemble, Linda Bangs Urban, he wrote Raccontino op. 153 for baritone saxophone and percussion in 1980, and Legenda op. 85 was created at the initiative of a member of the Rascher Quartet – saxophonist Bruce Weinberger. As a result, this piece exists in two different versions. The original version for bass clarinet and piano was first performed in 1972 by the ensemble 'Due Boemi di Praga', and only in 1974 did B. Weinberger present the version with solo tenor saxophone. The three-movement composition 2+2 op. 179 from 1982 is attributed to the Dutch 'Due contempore', and finally, Lento dramatico op. 264 was composed by Lukáš in 1994 again on commission, this time for the Days of Contemporary Music in Prague.
