The conquest of space in the news and reports of Czechoslovak Radio from 1957 to 1989. Three, two, one... welcome aboard and prepare for a journey through one of the many dimensions of our historical memory. Starting in 1957, when Earth launched its first artificial satellite, Czechoslovak Radio broadcast many programs related to this attractive field of science and technology. However, the initial phase of space flights after 1961 was presented exclusively (and often very vigorously) in line with socialist propaganda. Although later on, the overt sarcasm, irony, or even mockery towards the 'other side' softened somewhat, and the authors of the news and reports chose a more factual tone, until 1989, Soviet space endeavors naturally received more airtime on the radio waves. Nevertheless, the news programs about the conquest of space hold their value as an integral part of radio history. A completely different dimension in this area is represented by popular science programs. Their authors (for example, in Meteor, but also elsewhere) generally adhered to a serious scientific approach, broadcasting information that was truthful, verified, and professionally sound, often presented with a refined authorial style and tasteful playfulness effectively serving the content...
