It is 1,825 meters long and spans the East River. It connects two parts of New York - Manhattan and Brooklyn. At the time of its opening, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world and the first suspension bridge made of steel cables. Its towers were the tallest structures in the entire Western Hemisphere at that time. Construction began on January 3, 1870. The bridge was completed after 13 years and opened on May 24, 1883. Since its opening, it has become a symbol of New York and has been a national historic landmark since 1964.
