The game Western Kingdoms is set in the period towards the end of the king's reign, around the year 980 AD. Our once-powerful king has chosen peace over prosperity and, in exchange for a truce, has bequeathed our enemies heaps of gold and vast territories. However, peace is a fragile matter. The kingdom is falling into poverty, and many subjects no longer believe that our king is a capable leader. Some have even decided to separate from the crown lands. We still enjoy the favor of the royal court, but our future is now uncertain. As viscounts, we must think wisely and act decisively. We do not want to oppose the king, but if the balance of power were to suddenly shift, we must first maintain the favor of the people. The goal of the game Western Kingdoms is to achieve the highest number of victory points at the end of the game. Points can be earned by building various buildings, copying manuscripts, working on the castle, and obtaining contracts for new lands. Players start the game with a handful of loyal townsfolk, but if they want to succeed in their endeavors, they should quickly surround themselves with other talented servants.
