This Czech-language audiobook presents Plato’s account of Socrates’ defence. In 399 BCE, Socrates faced accusations that he was undermining confidence in social institutions, while his accusers sought to protect young people from the harmful influence of a dangerous sceptic. Athens’ democracy felt weakened and was searching for threats and causes of its decline, and the philosopher was ultimately sentenced to death. Plato, who was present among the audience, gave his teacher’s defence its celebrated literary form. The recording also includes a discussion titled “Did They Mistake a Critic for an Enemy?”, in which Petr Šourek talks about Socrates with Professor Filip Karfík. Jaroslav Dušek plays Socrates and Daniel Šváb plays his accuser Meletus; the Athenian people are accompanied by the drumming of Zdeněk Konopásek, with Tauri providing the bark.
