Science knows thousands of plant and animal species, but some have not been seen for decades and may be close to extinction. To save them, they must first be found again. This deductive board game takes players on expeditions to rediscover a particular lost species, casting them as scientists searching for animals long absent from view. Although such species occur around the world, the game focuses on those living on the island of Papua New Guinea. The organization Re:wild has compiled a worldwide list of lost species and, together with various partners, organizes expeditions and encourages others to search for these remarkable animals. Using an app, logical rules and deduction, players try to determine the locations of different species, including parrots, marsupials, frogs and pythons, as well as one lost species that appears as an empty space during exploration. They move around the island, conduct surveys, set camera traps, visit towns and record information on a notesheet. On each turn, a player chooses one action, advances the time track and may trigger the expedition leader’s effect. The player furthest behind always takes the next turn. The game ends when someone correctly identifies the location of the lost species and its surroundings, followed by final scoring for correct observations, finding the lost species, assistance cards and bonuses for the first observations. The winner is the player who contributes most to discovering all the species. The game requires a smart device with the free companion app installed, but no internet connection during play. Players may share one device or use one each. It is designed for 1–4 players aged 14 and over and includes a double-sided game board, notesheets, player screens, scientist figures, an expedition leader figure, mountain tokens, assistance cards, lost-species cards, observation tokens, phase tokens, camera-trap tokens, town tokens, a ship-shaped token tray, parrot-flock tokens, the rules and supplementary sheets.
