Description
The dystopian vision depicts a future USA transformed into the Republic of Gilead, ruled by a clerical-fascist regime that militantly calls for a return to traditional values. The country struggles with ecological disasters and a loss of human fertility, so women who can still bear children are forced into sexual slavery as "handmaids" in the families of commanders, to bear offspring instead of their infertile wives. One of them is the narrator, who must carefully maneuver between the commanders, their wives, the housekeepers known as Marthas, and the other "handmaids"...
