Maori Tattooing
H. G. Robley first encountered Maori art during his military service in New Zealand and thirty years later published this classic work of ethnography. The book, first published in 1896, not only summarizes all testimonies about tattooing from earlier times but is enriched by Robley's numerous observations from thirty years of life among the indigenous people. Maori tattooing, or moko, consists of compositions of motifs and symbols, created with pigment injected into carved skin, reflecting the lineage of the bearer, their tribal affiliation, and spirituality. The author describes the initial ways in which moko came to the attention of Europeans, compares and finds differences between male and female moko, focuses on the patterns and "designs" of ornaments, the tradition of custom in legends and songs, and the practice of mokomokai: the method of preserving the heads of ancestors and enemies.
