Description

This DVD presents a rare, authentic documentary about the distinguished artistic work and eventful life of Karel Ančerl, one of the most important conductors of the 20th century. The recording of the opening concert of the Prague Spring festival in 1968 captures Ančerl conducting Smetana’s Má vlast with the Czech Philharmonic, which he led for 18 years and brought among the world’s finest symphony orchestras. The concert also marked the beginning of his farewell to the orchestra and his homeland: the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 found the conductor in Toronto, and after one guest appearance in Prague in 1969, he never returned from exile. A second filmed concert shows Ančerl with the Czech Philharmonic and the outstanding Polish violinist Henryk Szeryng performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in 1966. The 1968 documentary offers a unique encounter with Karel Ančerl, while the extensive booklet completes the portrait of his sincere personality with interesting and little-known biographical information.
