Description
Miroslav Paleček’s album marks his eightieth birthday with seventeen new songs. A veteran of the Czech folk scene, Paleček has been singing, playing and releasing music for almost sixty years, first in a humorous duo with Michael Janík and for many years now as a solo artist, creating delicate melodies with poetic lyrics. Following albums devoted to songs by Jaroslav Ježek, Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich, and to poems by Jaroslav Seifert, this anniversary release sets words by nineteenth-century classics F. L. Čelakovský, V. Hanka, K. V. Rais and R. Kipling alongside those of more modern poets such as J. Seifert and J. Hořec, as well as contemporary lyricists J. Fousek and J. Topinková. Performed with voice, guitar and a chamber studio orchestra led by Pavel Fořt, the music combines discreetly electrified rhythm instruments with accordion, flute and strings, complementing Paleček’s unmistakably natural vocal style. Old Czech schoolbook poems, English classics, the country’s only literary Nobel laureate and present-day feelings come together seamlessly. The album includes “When,” “The Journey and the Goal,” “The Confused Kingdom,” “A Gift of Love,” “Violet,” “Don’t Try to Escape,” “Snow,” “Song About Snowflakes,” “Lovers in the Snow,” “A Christmas Carol in the Snow,” “The Grape Harvest,” “A Song with a Chorus,” “Conversation,” “Recipe,” “God Will Find It Hard to Change Us,” “The Path Home” and “Evening.”
