This two-record gatefold compilation presents 20 of Hana Zagorová’s finest chansons from 1968–2018. A unique singer with an exceptional repertoire, Zagorová is admired for the richly varied quality of her musical legacy, with her chansons ranking especially highly. From the late 1960s, she first attracted attention through beat arrangements of ballads with excellent lyrics, performed by a singer and actress gifted with dramatic talent. She remained devoted to this demanding area of popular music for more than five creative decades. The melodies of Karel Svoboda, J. Wykrent and J. Zmožek, as well as those of O. Brzobohatý and Radůza, were strengthened by her own lyrics or by her careful selection of words by Z. Rytíř, P. Žák, P. Vrba and M. Horáček. With feeling and natural credibility, she addressed her loyal audience through songs about love, joy, worries, encounters, partings and memories. From her debut on Ostrava radio and her long collaboration in Prague with K. Vágner, she later moved to D. Hádl’s Vyžlovka studio, where her latest songs were recorded. Zagorová did not possess the dark alto associated with the French chanson tradition, but without artificiality or excessive expression she conveyed powerful emotions and her characteristic kindness.
