Description

This Czech-language audiobook presents František Cinger’s account of Jaroslav Ježek, a musical genius whose melodies are familiar to everyone, while his extraordinary life remains full of surprises. Drawing on Ježek’s letters and lesser-known archival materials, it reveals his private and love life, his development from an almost blind boy in a school for the visually impaired into an acclaimed composer and artist, his opposition to fascism, and the dramatic turns he faced in exile. Ježek died as a refugee in New York on New Year’s Day 1942, aged just thirty-five. Actor Radek Melša, nominated for the 2025 Thálie Award for his title role in the ABC Theatre production Ježek, brings sensitivity and depth to the narration. The audiobook explores unknown facts, intimate moments and times when music became more than art: it became a weapon. It also includes recordings of Jaroslav Ježek’s songs from the Ultraphon and Supraphon archives.
