This Czech-language MP3 audiobook presents Vladimír Hulpach’s retellings of thirteen of William Shakespeare’s best-known dramas, performed by Radúz Mácha, Barbora Mišíková, Václav Jílek, Veronika Gajerová, Jakub Albrecht and Vladana Brouková. Hulpach combines the stories with quotations from famous monologues and dialogues, in Josef Václav Sládek’s translation, to bring Shakespeare’s work closer to young listeners. Written at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the plays capture recurring aspects of human existence, including love, hatred, loyalty and betrayal, as well as historical events such as battles and struggles for the throne. The selection includes Timon of Athens, Antony and Cleopatra, King Lear, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, King Henry IV, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, Othello, King Richard III and Twelfth Night. The music features works by Giovani Girolamo Kapsperger, Vincenzo Albrici, Adam Michna of Otradovice and Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, performed by Collegium Marianum.
