This Czech-language CD-MP3 collection presents the work of Jan Neruda, a celebrated Czech poet, writer and journalist whose writing combines harsh reality with timeless poetry. A member of the Mayists, a generation that followed Karel Hynek Mácha’s collection Máj, Neruda created his most important work in the second half of the 19th century. He spent most of his life in Prague’s Lesser Town, a place that profoundly influenced his writing, and worked with many contemporary newspapers and magazines, developing his distinctive form of the newspaper feuilleton. In his best-known work, Tales of the Lesser Town (1878), he uses a modern, objective view of the events and people around him, bringing harsh reality into his storytelling. His poetry draws inspiration from nature, people and the cosmos, combining humour with patriotic appeals. The collection includes Tales of the Lesser Town read by Zdeněk Štěpánek, as well as the extensive Portrait of the Poet Jan Neruda, compiled from many of Neruda’s works and performed by Jan Tříska, Marie Tomášová, Otomar Krejča and others. New recordings complete two previously missing Tales of the Lesser Town and feuilletons, read by younger performers Radúz Mácha, Radek Melša and Šimon Krupa.
