Description
This CD brings together Marta Kubišová and the Eben brothers in a collection of Advent and Christmas songs, including musical settings of excerpts from the Gospels of Saint Luke and Saint Matthew. Marek Eben composed the music, with arrangements assisted by David and Kryštof, and the performers are joined by Dalibor Štrunc on cimbalom, Ingeborg Žádná on cello and viola da gamba, Petr Hapka on hurdy-gurdy, and the Schola Gregoriana Pragensis male choir. Fifteen festive pieces receive a modern yet reverent interpretation, including Blessed Virgin, The Son of God Is Born, The Prophets Prophesied and A Joyful Day Has Come. Seven bonus tracks, recorded between 1967 and 1999, extend the holiday theme with less familiar songs and recordings, including Greensleeves, a lullaby for unborn children and a rendition of Caruso. The album also recalls Kubišová’s repeated support for public charitable collections during Advent.
