Description
This collection of adult recordings from the Supraphon archive presents the legendary actor Vlastimil Brodský across half a century, from his youth to the end of his life. His work for children has already been released many times, so this selection focuses on performances for adult listeners. The earliest recordings of the young Brodský date from 1944 and 1946 and include František Němec’s Sentimental Romance and Hašek’s The Good Soldier Švejk. The 1960s are represented chiefly by Čapek’s War with the Newts, in which Brodský plays Bondy. The 1970s feature his performances in Čapek’s R.U.R. and Vančura’s Summer of Caprice. The 1980s and 1990s include readings of Ota Pavel’s A Full Crate of Champagne and Karel Poláček’s Men out of Play, as well as Neil Simon’s Come Blow Your Horn and the one-act plays An Official’s Morning by N. V. Gogol and A Reluctant Tragedian by A. P. Chekhov. Brodský won listeners over with a clear, unpretentious delivery combined with ironic humour and an engagingly emerging comic quality. His acting was always believable, sensitive and sincere.
