Description
This Czech-language audiobook presents Stefan Zweig’s renowned novel, often described as a drama of the heart, body and spirit. It takes listeners to a remote town in the old monarchy, where officers spend their free time in cafés and wine bars. By chance, impoverished Lieutenant Anton Hofmiller is invited to a local château and becomes dazzled by its opulent surroundings. During the festivities, he suddenly realises that he has failed to ask the host’s daughter to dance. Trying to make amends for his faux pas, he does not notice that the girl at the table is paralysed. The young man attempts to compensate for his awkwardness, but instead becomes entangled in his own well-intentioned conventional lies and in his fear of his fellow officers’ judgement. He awakens love in the disabled girl that he cannot and does not wish to return, yet, sensitive to her sadness and loneliness, he allows himself to be carried away by compassion. Radúz Mácha, the audiobook’s narrator, is also the leading actor in a successful National Theatre production inspired by the novel, bringing the narrator deeply into the feelings of a hero instinctively trying to shield his own soul from another person’s suffering.
