This Czech-language audiobook presents Gustave Flaubert’s humorous novel Bouvard and Pécuchet, the literary source of the legendary television series Once Upon a Time There Were Two Scribes, read in a two-voice performance by Miroslav Táborský and Václav Kopta. Set in France during the second half of the 19th century, it follows two retired copyists who move from Paris to the countryside to pursue their hobbies. Their scientific experiments all end in failure and their efforts become the subject of ridicule, whether they are gardening, making spirits, attempting to crossbreed animals or holding séances. Their extraordinary clumsiness does not stop them embarking on further adventures involving archaeology, agriculture and the education of orphans. The audiobook includes a number of comic episodes that were not included in the television adaptation.
