This Czech-language audiobook presents letters written by Božena Němcová between 1844 and 1862, read by Aňa Geislerová and Igor Orozovič, with musical fragments from Bedřich Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1, “From My Life,” performed by the Pavel Haas Quartet. Aňa Geislerová, who portrays the famous writer in a new television miniseries, gives a compelling reading of her correspondence, while Igor Orozovič explains the historical context. Němcová entered Czech literary life around 1844, brought among the patriots by her husband Josef Němec. Young, beautiful and intelligent, she captivated everyone and formed a circle of friends and acquaintances from Czech patriotic society, many of them recipients of her letters. Her correspondence may have contributed to the emergence of Němcová the writer: she felt a strong need to write about what she saw around her, creating almost reportage-like passages in her private letters. From the 300 surviving letters, those that characterize the individual periods of her life have been selected, ranging from hope and joy to disillusionment and bitterness, and from romantic enthusiasm to despair. The audiobook follows a four-part television series about Božena Němcová’s life, first broadcast in January 2021. Total duration: 2 hours 25 minutes.
