Description

This audio recording presents a selection of communist speeches and songs that have become comic performances with the passage of time. The edited archive recordings portray the period before the 1989 change of regime and follow the 2009 release Rudí baviči aneb soudruzi ve vlastní šťávě. Archive worker Miloslav Turek has discovered a number of forgotten speeches by politicians of the time. Seen from the perspective of history, their bombastic boasts become comic performances. The selection includes Klement Gottwald’s February 1948 speech to farmers, in which he claims that the communists will not establish agricultural cooperatives and advises them to drive away anyone who says otherwise “at a pig’s pace.” Hate-filled speeches against Marshal Tito are followed years later by a warm celebration of Yugoslavia; a tirade about monetary reform is followed by an explanation of udder massage; and the recording concludes with Jiřina Švorcová criticizing the intelligentsia’s “vulgar skepticism” in 1968. The speeches are accompanied by period songs celebrating socialist construction, some of them previously unreleased and performed by amateur youth choirs, as well as a short fairy tale from a collectivized village.
