This CD presents 21 of Marie Rottrová’s greatest songs with a soul, including soul, blues, gospel and black dance music. The selection traces the music that shaped her beginnings in Ostrava, first heard on Radio Luxembourg and later recorded with the bands Majestic and Flamingo, and reflects the repertoire that earned her the nickname Lady Soul. Although she later moved partly beyond this style, she carried its feeling and expressiveness into everything she sang. The album includes songs with Czech lyrics by V. Čort, A. Brumovská, Z. Borovec, P. Vrba and J. Fikejzová, as well as original contributions from the Flamingo/Plameňáci circle and Jaroslav Wykrent. The songs remain compelling through her expressive, perfectly phrased singing and genuine emotional involvement.
