Description
This Czech-language audiobook contains an authentic recording of a performance of Milan Kundera’s play, discovered in the archive of Prague’s Na zábradlí Theatre. Recorded on 14 January 1970, shortly before the play was banned by the censors, it presents a simple but sharply satirical story: a school principal draws a diamond on the blackboard, has the incident investigated and enjoys the reactions of his colleagues. When a falsely accused pupil eagerly confesses to an act he did not commit, the investigating committee rewards him with the role of informer. Intoxicated by his power, the principal then imprudently tells the chairman’s wife what he really thinks of her husband, falls into a trap and becomes an unwilling kind of sex slave. The play mocks grotesque systems of power and features performances by Miloš Kopecký, Josef Chvalina, Světla Svozilová, Eva Svobodová, Helena Lehká, Inka Čekanová, Hana Smrčková, Jan Přeučil and Oldřich Vlach, among others. The recording is directed by Václav Hudeček, with music by Zdeněk Šikola.
