This CD presents songs by the rebellious singer Jiří Dědeček, recorded during his performances at Prague’s Semafor Theatre in March 1989. They reflect the period in which they were created, yet even after two decades remain striking and timeless. With piercingly simple, intelligent shorthand, Dědeček’s lyrics and the speeches between the songs aim at concise, unexpected and compelling statements. Pavel Klusák writes in the accompanying text that listeners often laugh at the way Dědeček continues to hope for normality in an essentially distorted world, sometimes assuming it with deliberately naive storytelling. The result makes people laugh for several reasons at once, above all at the exposed contrast. Since his first LP, Jiří Dědeček has done a great deal; he recorded all his later albums without having to play games with censorship, but he was already free when this first one was created.
