Duality / Zimmermann, Vaňhal - Fagotové koncerty - CD

This classical music CD presents works by two composers, Anton Zimmermann and Jan Křtitel Vaňhal, performed by two bassoonists, Ondřej Šindelář and Sergio Azzolini. The bassoon is not often featured as a solo instrument in concerto literature, while a concerto for two bassoons is an even greater rarity, possible only in an ensemble with two soloists on the instrument. For many years, one such double concerto has been performed under the name of the important Czech composer Jan Křtitel Vaňhal, but Ondřej Šindelář, a player of the classical bassoon, discovered an identical concerto in a Prague archive under the name of Anton Zimmermann. The two works differ only in their middle slow movement, leaving the mystery of their authorship and possible meeting unresolved. This recording presents Zimmermann’s version of the double concerto in a world premiere, along with his bassoon concerto, also recorded here for the first time, and one of Vaňhal’s three surviving bassoon concertos. The programme features remarkable, previously undiscovered music performed by outstanding soloists and orchestra. The contents are classical music.
