Description

Bohuslav Martinů’s String Quartets Nos. 2, 3, 5 and 7 are performed by the Pavel Haas Quartet, an ensemble ranked among the leading chamber groups on the international stage. The quartet has worked intensively on Martinů’s chamber music for many years and has presented it in full, including at London’s Wigmore Hall. For this recording, the ensemble has selected four contrasting works that together create a compelling musical arc spanning more than two decades of the 20th century. The Second Quartet marked Martinů’s breakthrough into international recognition, while the Third gives the composer considerable scope for experimentation. The Fifth, written in Paris in 1938, is full of emotion and inner tension, whereas the post-war Seventh, composed in New York in 1947, seems to return to Dvořák-like Romantic lyricism and melodic richness. In the interpretation of the Pavel Haas Quartet, these works emerge with unexpected intensity. Known for its rich, colourful sound, fascinating ensemble playing and attention to detail, the group not only understands Martinů’s musical language but communicates it convincingly, drawing listeners into the inner world of one of the great Czech composers of the 20th century. The performers are Veronika Jarůšková on first violin, Marek Zwiebel on second violin, Šimon Truszka on viola and Peter Jarůšek on cello.
