Description
This classical CD presents all three of Béla Bartók’s piano concertos in a recording by pianist Tomáš Vrána, the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava and conductor Gábor Káli. The concertos portray different stages of the composer’s life, from the discovery of his own musical language to the greater refinement and reconciliation of his difficult final years. The calm, peaceful atmosphere of the most frequently performed Third Concerto contrasts sharply with the unceasingly turbulent struggle of the First and the lively vitality of the Second. Their extreme technical demands have nevertheless prevented these works from being performed more often. For young piano virtuoso Tomáš Vrána, the recording goes far beyond merely mastering the technical challenges. Jean-Efflam Bavouzet praised his dedication, musical intelligence, profound understanding of the score, rhythmic sense and mastery. Vrána also demonstrates a similar sensitivity and skill in his work with words, accompanying the recording with an engaging text in the CD booklet.
