Description
The Well is Vilém Blodek’s comic opera in one act, performed by soloists, choir and orchestra of the National Theatre in Prague under conductor František Škvor. To mark the Year of Czech Music and the 150th anniversary of the death of Czech composer Vilém Blodek, this release presents a stereo recording of the opera from 1959, previously unavailable on any physical format. Although the recording briefly appeared on LPs in the first half of the 1960s, it was issued only in mono and then disappeared from the catalogue for many decades. After almost 66 years and careful sound reconstruction from the original tapes, this unique rarity from the early days of stereo is released in its original sound. The soloists are Milada Šubrtová, Štěpánka Štěpánová, Ivo Žídek and Zdeněk Kroupa. The choir and orchestra of the National Theatre in Prague are conducted by František Škvor, for whom this is also his only complete opera recording in the Supraphon catalogue. The release also commemorates the recent centenary of the birth of National Theatre singer Milada Šubrtová. The libretto is by Karel Sabina.
