Description
This CD presents Gustav Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn in a new arrangement for baritone, wind octet and double bass, performed by baritone Peter Schöne and the PhilHarmonia Octet Prague. The program includes ten songs from the collection, including “The Sentinel’s Song,” “St. Anthony of Padua’s Sermon to the Fish,” “The Earthly Life,” “The Drummer Boy” and “Primeval Light,” along with Blumine and the Scherzo, originally the second and third movements of Symphony No. 1. The arrangement creates an intimate, chamber-like path between the piano and orchestral versions, bringing out the distinctive colors of Mahler’s songs. The prominent role of wind instruments has a deep connection with Mahler’s childhood, when he often heard the military band in Jihlava, and with the military motifs that run throughout his music. The recording features members of the PhilHarmonia Octet Prague, with Petr Ries on double bass and Michael Kroutil on military drum.
