This 2-CD set presents the complete piano trios of Antonín Dvořák: No. 1 in B-flat major, Op. 21; No. 2 in G minor, Op. 26; No. 3 in F minor, Op. 65; and No. 4, “Dumky,” Op. 90. The recording brings together pianist Boris Giltburg, winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, and violinist Veronika Jarůšková and cellist Peter Jarůšek, key members of the world-renowned Pavel Haas Quartet. Dvořák’s “Dumky” is among his most famous works and one of the most frequently recorded chamber compositions, while the first two trios are heard only rarely. Leoš Janáček praised “Dumky” by saying, “A new source of light has radiated here,” and the critic Eduard Hanslick described the F minor Trio as the composer’s passport “among the best modern masters.” The three musicians combine brilliant technique with an extraordinary unity, breathing together as if they were one being. Recorded under the supervision of legendary producer Andrew Keener in the beautiful Wye Valley on the English-Welsh border, this is an exceptional performance of Dvořák’s music.
