Description
This CD presents Eugène Ysaÿe’s Six Sonatas for Solo Violin, Op. 27, composed in 1923, performed by Daniel Matejča on a 1776 Joseph Gagliano Filius violin. The recording marks the centenary of the cycle’s creation and also includes Obsession II by Jana Vöröšová, a work inspired by Ysaÿe’s sonatas and composed for this recording. Ysaÿe, known as the “king of violinists,” wrote the six sonatas after being deeply moved by a performance of Bach’s Violin Sonata in G minor, BWV 1001. Conceived as a counterpart to Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas, each sonata was tailored to the style of one of his celebrated colleagues. The technically demanding cycle pushes the instrument to the limits of its possibilities. A century later, the young Czech virtuoso Daniel Matejča takes up this challenge, while Vöröšová’s new composition reflects both Ysaÿe’s sonatas and Matejča’s musicality and virtuosity.
