Description
This recording by Collegium Marianum explores music, dance and devotion to the Virgin Mary on opposite sides of the world. Its programme brings together the Peruvian and Bolivian traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries with Czech and Moravian Baroque and folk music, including a hymn to the Virgin Mary from Lima, music from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the Peruvian Cachua serranita, works by Kristian Gottfried Hirschmentzel, Georg Philipp Telemann, Jan Josef Ignác Brentner, Domenico Zipoli and Martin Schmid, three Peruvian folk songs, and Czech and Moravian folk melodies. The recording reflects the cultural exchange associated with the Jesuit missions in South America, where European music met local traditions, while Telemann drew inspiration from Silesian and Haná folk music. Collegium Marianum performs with flutes, Baroque violins and viola, percussion, voice, charango, cimbalom and violone, led by Jana Semerádová.
