This four-CD set presents Antonín Dvořák’s complete works for solo piano, performed by Ivo Kahánek in a new recording. The repertoire includes the Polkas in E major, Pomněnka and Per pedes, Silhouety, Two Menuets, Dumka, Theme with Variations, Scottish Dances, Furiants, Piano Pieces, Waltzes, Eclogues, Album Leaves, Mazurkas, Moderato in A major, Otázka, Impromptu in D minor, Dumka and Furiant, Humoresque in F-sharp major, Two Pearls, Poetic Moods, Suite in A major, Two Piano Pieces and the Humoresques. Dvořák’s piano music remains an underexplored area even for many pianists and musicologists. It lacks Chopin’s expansive, finely nuanced emotionality and Liszt’s overt virtuosity, instead revealing a world of subtle personal lyricism, rich invention and finely shaped smaller pieces. The recording includes larger cycles such as Silhouety, Poetic Moods and the Suite in A major, which Dvořák valued greatly, as well as occasional works and several rarities recorded here for the first time, including Pomněnka, the earliest surviving piece by the fourteen-year-old composer. Kahánek offers a rare view of Dvořák’s rich inner world from the piano.
