Description
This classical music recording presents Josef Mysliveček’s Oboe Quintets Nos. 1 in B-flat major, 2 in D major and 3 in F major, together with his String Quartets in F major and A major, Op. 3, and Quartet No. 22 in G major, Op. posth. No. 5. Michaela Hrabánková plays the oboe, accompanied by the Doležal Quartet: Václav Dvořák and Jan Zrostlík on violins, Martin Adamovič on viola and Vojtěch Urban on cello. Mysliveček is most often associated with Mozart, whom he influenced for a time, and with opera. He left Prague for Italy at the age of 26 and achieved his first major success in Naples at 30 with the opera Bellerofonte in 1767. Alongside opera, he also excelled in symphonic and chamber music. His first cycle of quartets appeared in Paris in 1768, while the last was published in Amsterdam shortly after his death; these works were also often performed in larger formations as string symphonies. Mysliveček’s exceptionally beautiful and carefully developed slow middle movements are a distinctive feature of his music, while the oboe quintets are an even greater rarity. For a long time, they were known only through a reference in a letter from Leopold Mozart to Wolfgang in October 1777. Thanks to the initiative of the performers on this recording, the missing oboe part for three of the six quintets was traced. Michaela Hrabánková and the quartet’s first violinist contributed both to this discovery and to its premiere recording, as well as to the scholarly research surrounding it. Their stylistically sensitive interpretation underlines the importance of the find. This world premiere recording offers a fuller and more beautiful picture of Mysliveček, the great Il Boemo whom music historian Charles Burney placed alongside Hasse, Gluck and Haydn.
