Description
This recording presents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concertante Symphony for flute, oboe, horn, bassoon and orchestra, K. 297b, concert pieces for horn and strings, twelve duets for two horns, and two horn concertos reconstructed from surviving fragments. Radek Baborák performs on horn and conducts, joined by horn player Radovan Vlatković, flutist Walter Auer, oboist Clara Dent-Bogányi and bassoonist Bence Bogányi, with the Baborák Ensemble. This is not a recording for musicological purists, but an invitation to spontaneous music-making in distinguished company. Baborák does not hesitate to adapt an unused symphonic movement to complete the missing sections of an unfinished horn concerto, following a practice Mozart himself used countless times. Two “new horn concertos” thus emerge from the surviving fragments. The mysterious Concertante Symphony, K. 297b, appears here in Baborák’s arrangement for Mozart’s original instrumentation, with solo parts performed by virtuoso musicians from leading European orchestras. The twelve horn duets, the only completely extant work on the album in its original instrumentation, pair Baborák with another contemporary horn legend, Radovan Vlatković. Together with his friends, Baborák offers a journey into the world of his older colleague Mozart, filled with inexhaustible wit, ideas and colors.
