Description
Schubert’s Winterreise, set to poems by Wilhelm Müller, tells the story of a wanderer, a homeless man disappointed in love and in the world. Schubert rearranged the poems to form a narrative that raises questions about the extent to which it also reflects the life experience of the poet and composer, whose lives overlapped and both ended too soon. The isolated wanderer was a characteristic figure of 19th-century Romanticism, yet the theme still resonates with the loneliness of modern life. Bass-baritone Jan Martiník brings a large, richly coloured voice and exceptional sensitivity to the intimacy of these songs. His experience includes being a finalist in the 2007 Operalia competition and winning the song category at the 2009 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, as well as performing as a soloist at Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. Following his Supraphon debut, he performs Winterreise with the sensitive accompaniment of David Mareček. Their interpretation draws its strength from unadorned simplicity and profound intimacy.
