This two-CD recording presents Jan Dismas Zelenka’s six trio sonatas for two oboes or violins, bassoon and basso continuo, performed by Ensemble Berlin Prag with Dominik Wollenweber, Vilém Veverka, Jakub Černohorský, Mor Biron, Barbara Maria Willi and Ulrich Wolff. Baroque-music expert Reinhard Goebel ranks Zelenka, alongside Bach and Handel, among the five greatest composers of the first half of the 18th century, describing him as “grandiose and fantastic.” Written independently of official obligations, these sonatas push performers to the limits of their technical abilities and employ remarkable compositional techniques and expressive means, as well as an extraordinary overall cycle structure. Their scale and fascination invite comparison with Bach’s six cello suites. This recording combines the possibilities of modern instruments with deep insight into historically informed Baroque performance, offering another opportunity to appreciate Zelenka’s genius.
