This two-CD set presents the complete concertos for harpsichord, strings and basso continuo by Johann Sebastian Bach, BWV 1052–1058, recorded between 1966 and 1968 by harpsichordist Zuzana Růžičková, the Prague Chamber Soloists and conductor Václav Neumann. “Bach saved my life...” is not an empty declaration from Růžičková, whose music helped her survive the unimaginable conditions of Terezín, Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. In turn, she brought Bach’s music back to life by championing the harpsichord, rather than the customary piano, in Bach’s repertoire and by becoming the first person to record his complete works for harpsichord. The concertos were recorded with her friend Václav Neumann and their ensemble during the turbulent period of the Prague Spring and the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968, when recording was often interrupted by the rumble of demolition work and tanks passing the Rudolfinum. More than a historical document, these performances reveal Růžičková’s deep understanding of the inner order and hidden emotional power of Bach’s music, making them an enduring source of inspiration and a precious treasure for attentive listeners.
