Prague Recordings - 2CD

This two-CD set brings together Jean-Pierre Rampal’s complete Supraphon recordings made in Prague. The repertoire includes Jindřich Feld’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata for Flute and Piano in D major, František Antonín Rössler’s Concerto in D major, Franz Xaver Richter’s Concerto in D major and Sonata da camera No. 3 in A major, František Benda’s Concerto in E minor and Sonata in F major, and Carl Stamitz’s Concerto in G major, Op. 29. Rampal performs on transverse flute with the Czech Philharmonic and the Prague Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Václav Jiráček, Milan Munclinger, Václav Neumann and Martin Turnovský, alongside pianist Alfréd Holeček and harpsichordist Viktorie Švihlíková. Prague became a special place for Rampal after his first visit in 1955, which began his friendship with Milan Munclinger and led to a sold-out Prague Spring recital with Holeček. The following day he made his first Supraphon recording, Prokofiev’s sonata. Further recordings followed through 1956, including premieres of works by Benda and Richter and concertos by Stamitz and Rosetti. The Richter and Benda recordings received the Grand Prix du Disque de l’Académie Charles Cros. His Supraphon discography concluded with Feld’s Flute Concerto, recorded with the Czech Philharmonic in 1958. These legendary recordings are presented in newly remastered form.
