Sergei Taneyev was praised by Nikolai Rubinstein as a pupil destined to become both a magnificent pianist and an excellent composer, yet there is still much to discover about Taneyev the composer. Born in imperial Russia, he entered the Moscow Conservatory at the age of ten to study piano with Rubinstein and composition with Tchaikovsky. During his time in Paris, he met Turgenev, Gounod, Flaubert and Saint-Saëns, among others. At the age of twenty-eight, he became director of the Moscow Conservatory, where his pupils included Rachmaninov, Scriabin and Glière. The detailed craftsmanship of his scores reflects his thorough study of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, as well as a penetrating intellect remarkably combined with strong emotionality in both lyrical and dramatic passages. The Martinů Quartet and its guests capture this broad palette of expressive colours in a new complete recording of Taneyev’s quintets, affirming the composer’s rightful place among the most remarkable figures in European music. The performers include cellist Jiří Bárta, violist Jitka Hosprová and pianist Olga Vinokur.
