Description
The internationally acclaimed Smetana Trio turns to 20th-century music after its Brahms cycle. Maurice Ravel wrote relatively few works of chamber music, but his sole piano trio, completed hurriedly before he left for the front, is considered one of the finest works for this ensemble created during the century. Its motifs sometimes suggest the composer’s Basque origins and partly draw on a piano concerto that was then still in progress. Dmitri Shostakovich’s E minor Trio is an inventive, emotionally contrasting work and one of the great treasures and testimonies of the turbulent century in which it was written. The weight of the period, culminating in a world war, contrasts in many ways with the mood of his little-known First Trio, a single-movement and surprisingly mature work by the composer at the age of seventeen. The internationally respected Czech ensemble offers a mature and inspiring interpretation of three outstanding chamber works by Ravel and Shostakovich.
