Description
This CD presents Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet in F major, Op. 96, known as the “American”, together with his following quartet, Op. 106. Dvořák wrote the “American” Quartet in America shortly after his “New World” Symphony, aiming to create something highly melodic and simple while keeping Haydn in mind. He noted at the end of the sketch, “I am satisfied, it went quickly,” and critics responded enthusiastically to the music. For the young Pavel Haas Quartet, these two works are a matter of the heart. Following their award-winning recordings of the complete quartet works of Janáček, Haas and Prokofiev, including the Classic FM Gramophone Award, BBC Music Magazine Award and MIDEM Cannes Classical Award, the ensemble’s exceptional qualities are also evident here: a balance of precision and vitality, remarkable interplay and the soloistic potential of each individual player. Dvořák might well have written “I am satisfied” beneath this new recording too.
