Description
Compared with his symphonic and chamber music, Antonín Dvořák's piano works receive considerably less attention. The composer himself was not a virtuoso and often used the piano to test the strength of his musical ideas; he later orchestrated a number of pieces originally written for piano. His piano works therefore lack virtuosic display and instead reflect his inner life, offering delicate personal lyricism and capturing immediate ideas shaped with the refinement of a great musician. This subtlety and inner richness come fully to life in the playing of Radoslav Kvapil, a pianist renowned as a leading expert on and advocate of Czech piano music. In addition to complete recordings of the piano works of Dvořák and Janáček, he has made a pioneering recording of the music of Jan Václav Hugo Voříšek and has presented Czech music in concert halls around the world, including the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican and Carnegie Recital Hall.
