Description

This CD presents Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 From the New World, In Nature and Othello, conducted by Karel Ančerl (1908–1973), regarded alongside Václav Talich as one of the greatest Czech conductors of the 20th century. Most of Ančerl’s recordings were made for Supraphon, and this release forms part of the Ančerl Gold Series, created to commemorate the conductor with carefully remastered recordings, professional musical documentation, historical and aesthetic studies, and extensive photographs. Ančerl’s career was closely connected with the Czech Philharmonic, which he conducted for eighteen years from 1950. He was the first Czech conductor to achieve worldwide renown and led the orchestra to assured virtuosity and international prominence. His interpretations combined a considered overall conception with meticulous attention to detail, a thorough knowledge of the scores, a refined sense of style, vivid tonal imagination and a clearly defined conducting technique. His musically inspired recordings received prestigious international gramophone awards and continue to impress in their modern CD editions with their technical perfection and beautiful sound. The first six releases in the series combine representative works by Czech composers with German and Russian Romantic repertoire and symphonic music emphasizing rich sonority.
