Description

This issue explores the countryside as a theme in urban planning, a concept that initially seems contradictory because the countryside is often defined simply as what is not the city. Yet rural areas differ from cities not by a complete absence of urbanisation, but by its lower level. Administrative definitions consider settlement size and population density, with the upper limit for settlements usually ranging between 2,000 and 3,000 inhabitants, meaning that small towns can also be considered part of the countryside. Equally important are qualitative characteristics such as land use and residents’ way of life. The countryside far from large cities has a different character from suburban rural areas, which can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from suburbia, while rural characteristics may even appear within large metropolitan areas. The issue asks what the countryside really is, whether there is one countryside or many different rural environments, and what the specific nature of architectural work in the countryside may be. The contents are in English.
