Description
A village novel drawn from the author's own family history. Her grandchildren and the wider family know her only as the "wicked grandmother". But what was her real story? She grew up in the Czech countryside at the end of the 19th century without a mother, raised only by her father. She fell in love, married the man she longed for, who turned out to be an unreliable drunkard, and spent the rest of her life struggling between what she had dreamed of and what life actually gave her.
Spanning the years 1870–1947, the story follows the hard childhood of a poor country girl, her marriage, the dramatic fate of the couple and their children through both world wars, all the way to the grandchildren who see only a cold and unforgiving old woman. A vivid portrait of a woman whose stern face and harshness hid deep inner wounds.
