Description
This novel by Charles Ferdinand Ramuz (24 September 1878–23 May 1947), the most important Swiss French-language writer, follows the life of an ordinary, thoughtful countryman in the second half of the nineteenth century. In his daily struggle for existence and dignity, the hero, who narrates his own story, travels from his native canton of Vaud, from Lake Geneva to Paris. Along the way, he takes on several jobs and professions, learns about the nature of different people, experiences love and hope, and encounters the hardships of life and the burden of loneliness. He does not avoid disappointment or failure, eventually returning to his native region, where he finds the meaning of life in inner peace and acceptance of his fate. The novel is in Czech.
