Description
Funeral orator Franz Escher is waiting for an electrician because his kitchen socket has a faulty connection. To pass the time, he reads a book about Elio Russo, a crown witness who has handed 27 Mafia bosses over to justice. Elio is waiting in prison for his release. Having betrayed so many people, he fears for his life, and while building a new identity he must keep his past strictly secret. The conscientious and honest Escher is hiding something too. They take turns reading a book about each other, and the narrative jumps from one story to the other until the two finally meet in a surprising conclusion. In this novel, acclaimed Austrian writer Wolf Haas sets off a fireworks display of narrative invention: what begins as two relatively straightforward life stories turns into a dizzying dance involving a dead tradesman, family entanglements and many unresolved secrets. It shows what the world of the artist M. C. Escher might have looked like if he had devoted himself to literature instead of drawing optical illusions.
