Description
Erich von Däniken predicts that a day of reckoning for human knowledge lies ahead, referring to a prophecy carved in stone by the Maya. According to it, the god Bolon Yokte returns to Earth on 23 December 2012 after a long journey. The author follows tangible traces of the gods to prehistoric ruins in the Bolivian Andes at an altitude of 4,000 metres, which he argues could not have been inhabited by Stone Age people. He cites the Incas, who claimed that gods built this imposing settlement in a single night, and recalls that archaeologists discovered it a century ago, along with a calendar charting a past up to 15,000 years old. He also visits the Serapeum at Saqqara in Egypt, where monstrous beings of unknown origin were buried. Däniken strips away the religious interpretation of humanity’s mythological history and argues that the end of the Mayan calendar will bring the return of other gods as well, whose presence will profoundly shake human complacency.
