Description
This Czech-language collection brings together previously unpublished short stories, reportage pieces and reflections by Arnošt Lustig, the internationally acclaimed writer, journalist and humanist. Lustig survived the horrors of the Holocaust as a young man, and these experiences profoundly shaped his literary work. He wrote the stories while working as a war correspondent during Israel’s War of Independence in 1948–1949. Alongside stories from Israel, the book contains reflections and reportage on the Holocaust and exile. All the texts bring readers closer to the feelings and lives of ordinary people under existential pressure, portraying them in extreme and everyday, but above all difficult, situations. Lustig writes with the dramatic force, clarity and humanity that characterize his later work, offering empathy and timeless wisdom that remains relevant today.
