Description
St Vitus Cathedral in Prague, Notre-Dame in Paris, the Votive Church in Vienna and other majestic churches in European capitals seem to most of us to embody the true Middle Ages. Few people realise that these buildings are often 19th-century creations or were extensively rebuilt during that period. Their appearance is less a testimony to the pre-modern past than the result of 19th-century romantic idealisation, nationalist disputes and economic interests. This book shows that our idea of the “true Middle Ages” has little in common with the original period, while revealing much about European culture over the last two centuries.
